British researchers reported on the website of Nature magazine on the 25th that their thin-film solar cells made with magnesium chloride are less expensive and less toxic than conventional manufacturing methods.
The existing solar cells are mainly two kinds of silicon batteries and cadmium telluride thin film batteries, which are lighter, thinner, and cheaper, and therefore are regarded as representative of the next generation of solar cells.
However, cadmium telluride needs to use cadmium chloride in the preparation process, and this substance has certain toxicity. In addition, cadmium reserves in the natural world are insufficient to ensure large-scale production of solar cells.
Researchers at the University of Liverpool say they are trying to make solar cell films using magnesium chloride instead of cadmium chloride.
As a result, it was found that films made of new materials are comparable to conventional cadmium telluride films in terms of photoelectric conversion efficiency, but the same dose of magnesium chloride is much lower in raw material cost than cadmium chloride.
